Chapter 17

Detroit, Michigan

“I’ve never been south of Flint,” Moreen stated as Ed navigated the highways and service drives leading through Detroit’s sprawling suburbs.

“You’re not missing anything,” he replied. “Just never go south of Ohio, promise me.”

“Why?”

“I’ll tell you later,” he replied, following Gilroy onto Eight Mile Road. “I think were getting close.”

The doubts about Moreen itched in his brain once again. He glanced at her quickly just to see her face, but she was looking out the window as they passed buildings infected with urban blight. Was following the cop a good idea? Hell, was getting involved with Moreen a good idea? Maybe Martin was right; maybe she was looney tunes, a freak. What if she was somehow mixed up in all of this?

Ed kept his eyes on the cop in front of him. What if she was in some kind of devilish love affair with the detective and they got off on killing girls? What if they were setting him up to take the fall? Ed glanced again at Moreen. This time she was facing forward and caught the look. She smiled at him. He smiled back.

They were on Eight Mile for only a few minutes before turning into the large police and civic complex. The parking lot was full to capacity and the nearest openings were quite far from the main entrance. Driving to the back of the building, Gilroy parked. Ed swerved in and took a spot near the cop. Gilroy was out quickly and was waiting for them to exit.

He looked impatient, Ed thought as he watched the cop pace slightly. Ed revisited the notion that they could be murderous lovers. Gilroy’s pacing could have been a sign of his nervousness with the whole situation. If they were involved, was she doing it for him? Was he killing for her?

Moreen was checking her appearance in the mirror and this extraneous delay seemed to agitate Gilroy even more. Ed could tell when someone didn’t like him, it was just something in the way they looked at him; and Gilroy was looking at him in that special, endearing way.

“I’m ready.” Moreen sighed as she closed her purse.

“Let’s get it over with,” Ed said as they got out of the car.

Gilroy waited from them to close the gap between him and the car. “It’s not far.”

“And to think you gave up all of this for the country life,” Ed said sarcastically.

The cop ignored the insurance investigator. “Follow me.”

The trio walked the broken concrete sidewalks to a side entrance. Gilroy held the door for them and pointed the way to the examination suites in the morgue. The territory was familiar for the detective and he looked forward to seeing Bethany again. He directed them to sit in a small reception area before venturing further to find Dr. Merchant. She was in Room Six and a familiar corpse was on the slab.

“I see you got my little present,” Gilroy said.

Bethany looked up from the coroner’s report and photos spread on a side table.
